FS Dillon

FS Dillon

by Jason Smith

FS Dillon is a rational type. Jason Smith took its inspiration from the Bauhaus movement’s philosophical emphasis on simple, practical forms. He added a thoroughly modern flavor, stark yet warm, imbued with the quirky individuality that has become a Fontsmith signature. The letter forms are simple and direct. Compact, with a large x-height, they are built for maximum clarity, economy of space, and impact.

FS Jack

FS Jack

by Fernando Mello and Jason Smith

FS Jack is a confident type. This cool sans serif is good-looking and enthusiastic, its humanist letter forms honest, clear and to the point. Designed by Brazilian Fernando Mello — a graduate from the University of Reading’s MA Typeface Design program — and Jason Smith, FS Jack was selected for the Tipos Latinos 2010 exhibition, the biennial showcase of Latin-American typography and type design.

FS Sally

FS Sally

by Phil Garnham and Jason Smith

FS Sally is a graceful type. This refreshingly simple serif design by Phil Garnham and Jason Smith lends a crafted, elegant finish to display and text typographies. It is modern in its transitional style but with a hint of the classic. Sally enables its forms to sit with distinctive aplomb in both long and short texts. Used big, the slender character shapes add a touch of elegance to headlines. Sally’s extended ligature set, small caps, full complement of ordinal lower case characters and seven sets of numerals allow users to further refine the text setting.

FS Rufus

FS Rufus

by Mitja Miklavčič and Emanuela Conidi

FS Rufus is an eccentric type. This cheeky, quirky, generous slab serif has wide forms and rounded corners. Combined with curious ink-traps, these create a unique personality. Equally at home in display and text sizes, this typeface is a collaborative design by Mitja Miklavčič and Emanuela Conidi — both graduates from the University of Reading’s MA Typeface Design respectively in 2006 and 2008 — and Jason Smith and Phil Garnham. The impressive ligature set in upper and lowercase turn this offbeat eco-warrior with a kooky nature into a very versatile family.

New Fonts
Coranto 2

Now available as a fully featured OpenType font with extended character set, Coranto 2 was originally based on Gerard Unger’s typeface Paradox. It arose from a desire to transfer the elegance and refinement of that type to newsprint. Over the past 25 years newspaper production has seen spectacular improvements. Today newspaper designers can look beyond the traditional group of news faces, and conversely news faces are often used outside the newspaper.

Coranto 2 has a larger x-height and new flourishes of robustness. It lends the text a refined touch with distinctive character and clarity. This update to the original Coranto includes the addition of over 250 glyphs featuring full Latin A language support (which includes the necessary accented letters for Northern and Central European languages), redesign of most accents, new ligatures, four sets of numerals, arbitrary fractions and superiors/inferiors. Furthermore, kerning was added and fine-tuned for even better performance.

Periodico

Periódico — “newspaper” in Spanish — was commissioned by the Spanish daily newspaper ABC. Eduardo Manso, inspired by Spanish typographic engravings from the 18th century, picked out their most relevant characteristics to use as the basis for this distinctive family. He borrowed details from the archetypical Spanish and omitted the too-idiosyncratic elements. His finished typeface isn’t just a revival or an interpretation; Periódico is a truly original type family, created from scratch to be equally functional and versatile.

Palestina

Rubén Fontana’s Palestina is inspired by Trade Gothic, Jackson Burke’s seminal American gothic. Palestina, strongly influenced by the era of metal typography, is a characteristic straight-sided sans with a distinctive true italic. As creative as it is functional, Palestina boasts a compact, balanced text image with a big personality; special ligatures; roman numerals; arrows, dingbats and ornaments. It’s been optimized for display use, titles, newspaper and magazine headlines.

Basile
Basile

Once upon a time, in a chancery handwriting workshop, Dario Muhafara tried an experiment. He mixed up a potent potion of chancery handwriting, stirring two dashes of extract of extra width, and digitized vigorously. In the new concoction, he detected a strong, familiar handwritten aroma and a tenderized texture so smooth and silky it practically begged to be used for small text. Satisfied and impassioned, he stirred up three new batches of Basile: italics, swash, and extra swash. He capped his creation with small caps. And how does this tale of trial with nary an error conclude? Basile’s initial and terminal forms and extended ligature set yielded such a faithful chancery text image that Tipos Latinos featured this font family in 2008. In other words, happily ever after.

Calluna Sans Regular

With the addition of Calluna Sans the Calluna family enters the world of the Sans/Serif Companions. This humanist sans follows the “two typefaces, one form” principle which is the core of Martin Majoor’s type design philosophy. The sans and the original text serif face share the same “skeleton”, ensuring both variants are perfectly compatible. The confident new sans is decidedly contemporary, yet proudly displays its old-style descent. Its classic proportions make it a perfectly legible text face.

Jos Buivenga offers the regular weight for free, allowing users to sample the functionality of the basic weight before purchasing the fully featured OpenType family of five weights, from light to black, with matching italics.
