HWT Antique Tuscan No. 9

Designed by Miranda Roth
Published by Hamilton Wood Type

The main source for this very condensed 19th-century Tuscan style design was a rare specimen printed by Wood Type historian Rob Roy Kelly of a 10-line font from Wm. Page & Co. The serifs were drawn to be sharp and angular, as opposed to the rounding often seen in this font from wear and tear in the print shop. Now with a full character set, this is the first digital version to include a lowercase and extended European character set. Best used at large sizes.

HWT Roman Extended Lightface

Designed by Miranda Roth
Published by Hamilton Wood Type

This delicate and handsomely proportioned extended Roman was issued by Page Manufacturing Co. in 1872 and released as simply “No. 251” after Page was acquired by Hamilton. It is a rare font to find in print shops, most likely due to the very fine lines that were less durable than bolder gothic jobbing fonts. While being quite wide, it still holds the elegant grace of wide Romans such as Craw Modern.

Cool Beans International

Designed by John Roshell
Published by Comicraft

Can you dig it, man? Comicraft’s Jazzy “JG” Roshell just swung by after playing bongos down at the coffee bar in his black turtleneck, stove-pipe trousers, dark glasses, and beret. Check out those rad Tiki corners and you’ll want to snap your fingers, put on some Miles Davis, and take the next train out of Squaresville, Daddio.

Capita

Designed by Dieter Hofrichter
Published by Hoftype

The vivid and warm Capita avoids the harshness found in many slab serifs thanks to its delicately curved terminals and soft appearance. Reminiscent of typewriter faces because of its almost monolinear design, its controlled outlines create a gentle motion. The combination of bracketed serifs and angular stroke endings give a nice tension to this versatile text face while lending it impact and personality when used big.

Aften Screen Web

Designed by Frode Helland
Published by Monokrom

Whereas most grotesques are aimed for titling use, Aften’s angled terminals, round shapes, and vertical proportions and spacing are that of a text face. It has fairly narrow capitals, and its gentle flares set a warm tone. Aften, a modest marriage of humanist and grotesque, is a text font that just plain works. Aften performs well on low-resolution screens at text sizes.

RehnRehn Condensed

Designed by Chris Dickinson
Published by Moretype

Rehn is a confident, open sans serif family with a finely tuned range of weights from thin to extra bold. The design is coupling of the humanist model and more technical-looking designs like DIN, with a striking spurless lowercase “a”. Available in both regular and space-saving condensed widths, this cool, dependable hardworking font comes with all the trimmings, providing the complete toolkit for all your typographic needs.
