Matthew Butterick is an attorney who advocates raising the bar for type design in the legal profession. He’s known for his book and website, both called Typography for Lawyers. After releasing several Font Bureau faces, he now designs attractive, practical fonts under his own name MB Type.

Equity

Equity’s sole purpose is making legal documents easier on the eyes. Designer Matthew Butterick adapted its features to legal software, heretofore known for its organizational capacities but not so much for its typographical savviness. He included two text grades for ideal output to office printers. Descended from Monotype Ehrhardt stock, Equity reads credibly, sets economically on the page, and satisfies the common requirement, “Times New Roman font, or comparable.”

FontShop welcomes the Arabetics library. Saad Abulhab started Arabetics in 2003 in response to the rising demand for Arabic type and the software to enable its automated typesetting. His designs range from traditional script to the fully rationalized and experimental.

Lahab

Lahab’s structure of graphic interplay extends from the solid horizontal movement along its baseline to each of its strong, lively forms. In three weights, each complete with italics, Lahab is suitable for both text and display. The face takes inspiration from the Diwani calligraphic tradition.

Informed by the Nastaliq style of Persian calligraphy, Saad Abulhab’s Nastarkib uses controlled shifts of stress to create gracefully balanced letterforms and exotic rhythm. Nastarkib comes in two weights, each with a companion italic.

Filmotype Adonis

Charles Gibbons revives the 1952 Adonis, one of Filmotype’s first casual handwriting fonts. This feature-rich face comes with ranging and lining figures and a number of alternate glyphs, including contextual alternates like punctuation for all-caps text.

Patrick Griffin’s reanimation of Filmotype Panama stays true to the original, a caricatured modern of goofy proportions. Balancing out Panama’s high contrast is the heavily bracketed wedged serif.
