New Fonts: exljbris, Flat-it Scripts, & OpenType LucasFonts

Font used in title graphic: Museo Slab and Xesy

Central to FontShop’s mission since its founding is to seek out new type makers who are producing original work relevant to today’s design. Our latest additions certainly meet that standard.

Jos Buivenga worked for several decades as an art director before creating his first fonts. These became the foundation of exljbris, a new type library informed by a type user’s experience. Ryoichi Tsunekawa, whose Flat-it we introduced last month, is also a fresh face on the scene. The sheer number of fonts he’s made runs contrary to his youth. Yet even in his short career he’s already found time to rerelease enhanced editions of his early work.

A name that is by no means new to type design is Luc(as) de Groot. We’re pleased to release his first new retail fonts in years: light weights for TheSans and OpenType versions of TheSans Office, Spiegel, TheAntiqua Sun, and QuaText (formerly TheAntiqua E).

New Fonts
Museo

Museo
This highly original design began with the letter ‘U’, a single stroke with ends bent to form slab-like terminals. From that design Buivenga developed a lowercase, then additional weights, and eventually a matching Sans family and a more conventional Slab family. All three variations are clean, legible faces and excellent alternatives to overused typefaces from the entire spectrum of sans and slab serif classifications.

Calluna

Calluna
Buivenga’s first attempt to make a text face was a serious one, the fruit of over 18 months of labor. Its unusual serif structure gives the letters a forward-leaning flow and paragraphs set in Calluna make for an effortless read.

Anivers

Anivers
Monolinear strokes take unexpected turns, get thinner at the joins, and end at an angle in this novel sans. Suitable for branding, infographics, and short texts.

Fertigo

Fertigo
A sinuous sans serif with a nod to brush-made forms, Fertigo is more than a pretty face, it’s a professional tool. Central European and Turkish languages supported and a connected script to boot.

Xesy

Xesy
A casual script with serious curves, Xesy includes a few ligatures and alternate glyphs for better connections and versatility. Expect the same from Flat-it’s vintage-inspired scripts below.
