New foundry: Anatoletype

Hoftype

Based in Berlin, the digital foundry Anatoletype was founded in 2005 by Elena Albertoni with French web designer Pascal Duez. After studying graphic design in Amiens, France, Italian-born Albertoni specialized in type design at École Estienne in Paris. She started out in this field at LucasFonts in Berlin, assisting Dutch type master Luc(as) de Groot for over seven years. Together with Type & Media alumnus Fritz Grögel she recently set up LetterinBerlin, a studio dedicated to handmade and digital design, particularly focused on lettering.

DejaRip

DejaRip began its life performing the tasks of user-interface text on the mobile phone. This highly versatile humanist sans also holds up well in print at small and modestly larger sizes. Its character set covers an uncommonly broad set of Latin-based languages, as well as Cyrillic.

Dolce

Dolce

Designed by Elena Albertoni
Published by Anatoletype

A casual glance at Anatoletype’s library reveals some bias toward designs drawn from manual processes. Dolce builds on the lessons learned while composing both Scritta, available as Scritta Nuova, and Dyna. In five weights of varying contrast, the full-featured, casual script explores the connections of handwritten forms using OpenType substitutions.

Fayon Grande

Designed by Peter Mohr
Published by OurType

The display companion to Fayon, Peter Mohr’s Fayon Grande, reworks the modern, warming its cool severity with a generous x-height, compact proportions, and pleasing — not the least bit industrial — swelled stroke terminals.

New Canada Type fonts: Soft Press, Spade

Soft Press

Designed by Aldo Novarese, Patrick Griffin
Published by Canada Type

In response to Geoffrey Lee’s Impact, Aldo Novarese released Metropol in 1967. Soft Press is a blunted version of Patrick Griffin’s 2007 reworking of the design, released under the name Press Gothic. Soft Press comes in biform (unicase) and small caps variants, and includes Cyrillic support.

Spade

Spade is an original, heavy, Western wood slab, a Clarendon casting a long shadow. It comes in both hard outlines and with its corners rounded, and features ‘biform’ or unicase characters as a stylistic set.

New Type-Ø-Tones font: MeMimas Dots

MeMimas Dots

Designed by Joan Barjau, José Manuel Urós
Published by Type-Ø-Tones

Star of the MeMimas Family, MeMimas Dots recreates — with carefully placed dots — the strange new letterforms you may have studied in the third grade. Its alternate caps diverge from cursive construction, introducing Romanized forms for a point of contrast.
