New Fonts: Identikal, Neufville, Virus

As the world’s most global type reseller, FontShop strives to introduce regionally renowned foundries and designers to the rest of the world. We did it last month with Porchez and today we’re adding two more local favorites to our fold. Run by twin brothers, Adam and Nick Hayes, Identikal’s futuristic fonts are hugely popular with the UK’s young web designers and electronic music promoters. Neufville Digital™, a joint venture of two important foundries from Spain and The Netherlands, are digitalization specialists, reviving hidden gems from the metal type era, as well as introducing new designs. This month’s update also brings two new releases from Jonathan Barnbrook’s Virus Fonts.

Neutraliser

Neutraliser takes its cues from round-ended industrial sans serifs like Isonorm but with regularized proportions for setting long text. Small caps and a serif version too.

Sharp

Identikal’s experimentation with creating letterforms from a singular shape resulted in this futuristic wonder.

Alwyn

Designed by collaborator Chris Dickinson, Alwyn is Identikal’s latest and most successful text face. Combining modern idiosyncrasies (see the ‘A’, ‘K’, and ‘Y’) with sound traditional forms, Dickinson has created a truly original contemporary sans.

Positec

Square, but with soft corners, Positec is a techno flyer face that is uncharacteristically suited for text.

Unda 1

Five fonts are each built with a different shape mapped to a common grid. Scoreboards, LED displays, alphabetic patterns — the possibilities are limited only by the matrix and your imagination. Unda 2 and Unda 3 add more dot matrix, vintage printer fun.

Andralis™ ND

Born in Buenos Aires, Rubén Fontana is one of the fathers of Latin American type design. His Andralis ND recalls the rugged, angular forms of Czech type from halfway around the world. The complete text family of regular, italic, and small caps is complemented with a bevy of fantastic ligatures. Andralis ND was selected by the jury for the Biennial Latin Letters in 2004.

Pragma™ ND

Type designer Christopher Burke created Pragma as a reaction against contemporary sans serifs with a modularity and smoothness. Its letterforms derive from the trinity of elements in conventional old-face types with serifs: capital letters based on Roman inscriptional models, small letters derived from humanistic writing, and a truly cursive italic.

Azuree™ ND

Striped, squat roman capitals recall the engraved lettering of the dollar bill.

Elizabeth™ ND

In the 1930s, Elizabeth Friedlander was commissioned to design a typeface for the Bauersche Giesserei in Frankfurt am Main, a most unusual commission for a woman at that time. Previously only available as metal type, Elizabeth is particularly loved by private presses for printing jobs that require a delicate touch. Don’t miss the gorgeous Swash Italic.

Fontana™ ND

Rubén Fontana’s eponymous typeface was designed for the Latin American magazine tipoGráfica with the Spanish language in mind. Lively but functional, Fontana ND is available in 30 styles of varying weights and widths, along with the unusual ligatures unique to Fontana’s designs.

Bourgeois

For Bourgeois, Jonathan Barnbrook and Marcus McCallion revised early 20th century letterforms with his contemporary touch. Four weights, two widths, and a large selection of alternate glyphs make it one of Virus Fonts’s most versatile families.

Doublethink

Drawn originally in the 1960s for a state-owned clothing company in the Soviet Bloc, Doublethink’s letters were far ahead of its time and ideal candidates for Virus to expand into a full alphabet.
