TYPO London 2011: Places

Europe’s most successful annual three-day design conference comes to London: TYPO. An A-list of influential speakers from the world of typography; information, graphic and digital design; brand experience; film; animation; publishing and education are confirmed for this inaugural edition. The theme for TYPO’s London debut is “Places”. The conference will take place from 20-22 October in Logan and Jeffery Halls at the University of London.

TYPO London follows the success of TYPO Berlin, which, at sweet 16, is Europe’s biggest, most influential design event. TYPO, originally focused on typography, has developed to showcase explorations in graphic design, digital media, advertisement, technology, culture, entertainment and business. Hundreds of participants return to TYPO Berlin each year. Now we’re crossing the Channel to continue to build our network in London.

Opening Speakers

Dale Herigstad will open the conference Thursday, speaking on the new topography of screen media. Dale is a leader in the interactive and “many-screen” world of interface design. Taking his lessons from rich media design as applied to television and film, he pioneered a unique spatial approach to mapping navigation systems for interactive TV and connected screens. His work blurs the lines between television, games and web, a concept he calls “New Television.” Dale was on the research team that developed the visionary gestural interfaces that first appeared in the film Minority Report, and is now leading development in the rapidly emerging world of gestural navigation for screens at a distance.

Recent Arrivals

Kutlu Çanlıoğlu and Titus Nemeth will explain how to design in 27 different languages. Kutlu is Senior Creative Director for BBC World Service, where he’s responsible for the user experience and design of 27 different language services, including Arabic, Russian, Mandarin, Hindi, Urdu, and Spanish. Titus Nemeth is a typographer, a student, and a teacher. His area of interest is Arabic and non-Latin typography. He teaches typography at the ESAD Amiens, France, and the ESAV Marrakesh, Morocco. Titus is a PhD candidate at the University of Reading, UK.

Closing Speakers

Neville Brody will close Friday’s lineup speaking at 8pm. Neville’s latest work has taken place in his own Research Studios, where he has worked on BBC’s online visual language. Wrapping up the conference on Thursday will be Tony Brook and Chip Kidd on Saturday. Tony, among his other roles, is a guest curator of “Wim Crouwel — A Graphic Odyssey”, a major retrospective of the Dutch master”s work currently on show at the Design Museum in London. Chip Kidd will discuss the expectations the designer places upon himself within the context of getting one’s dream commission.

Saturday is Type Day

On Friday Jeffery Hall will host London Design Day. Speakers featured will include Dylan Griffith, who has worked as the creative director for MTV Europe since January 2008, overseeing and directing the branding of the network and its subsidiary channels. A former promotions director with the BBC, Dylan has won a number of international awards, including Promax gold for his creative work. Also speaking are Will Hutton from It’s Nice That, Andy Stephens from Graphic Thought Facility, and Antony Harrington from OPX.

Saturday is Type Day, featuring Bruno Maag, Jonathan Barnbrook, Ivo Gabrowitsch, and others speaking on recent developments in type creation. Highlights of the Type Day program also include Andreas Frohloff’s highly sought-after calligraphy workshop.

Jonathan Barnbrook is a type designer, graphic designer and filmmaker. Since 1990 he has worked with cultural institutions, activist groups and charities and produced a steady stream of posters.
