Signage of the pre-vinyl sort
Many of us know that sign making has changed drastically over the last decade. As this skilled craft fades in favor of computer-cut vinyl stick-on letters in the hands of anyone who can afford the machine, it is nice to see a site like that of former signpainter-turned-photographer Mark Eastman. There one finds a visual record of letterforms and signs of the ilk we see less and less. Click here to visit Eastman’s site.

Getting the creative juices flowing
Alan Fletcher, former Pentagram partner and now consultant Art Director to Phaidon Press, is a master of concept and form. In his recent The Art of Looking Sideways, which he descbribes as “a primer in visual intelligence,” he creates a joyous celebration of text and image, content and design. In over 500 pages, Fletcher improvises, extemporizes, and plays with myriad themes and multiple ideas. The Art of Looking Sideways reflects Fletcher’s lifetime as a connoisseur of context. He creates spread after spread of enthralling topics punctuated with memorable quotations and maximizes these with surpising images and typographic genius. He says of this work, “This book has no thesis, is neither a whodunnit nor a how-to-do-it, has no beginning, middle or end. It’s a journey without a destination.” Any designer, type lover, reader, collector should share in Fletcher’s journey of the mind, eye and spirit. The Art of Looking Sideways, Phaidon Press.
