Two inimitable forces in design were refreshed on FontShop this month: the Adobe and Linotype libraries. Since 1985 Adobe has offered rigorously produced and selected fonts. Their work in software and user interaction lends them a unique perspective in type. Linotype, founded in 1886, has amassed some of the most significant typefaces of the 20th century. With designer Akira Kobayashi as type director, the library continues to grow with modern masterpieces. Both Adobe and Linotype are active foundries and this update brings their latest typefaces and enhanced reissues to FontShop. |

Brioso™ Pro
Named after the Italian word for “lively,” Brioso combines the immediacy of hand lettering while retaining rhythmic order. The result: a functional family that maintains usability without stagnancy. With four size ranges, five weights, and italics, Brioso’s many options are optimized by the OpenType format.

Garamond Premier™ Pro
Modelled after Claude Garamond’s 15th century book typefaces, Garamond Premier Pro is based on a large range of unique optical sizes. Designer Robert Slimbach encountered the cuts while researching the original Adobe Garamond. The uprights for the release are based on designs by Garamond, while the italics are based on lettering by Garamond’s contemporary Robert Granjon.

Sava™ Pro

Palatino® Sans & Palatino Sans Informal

Cosmiqua®
Akira Kobayashi, Linotype’s type director and accomplished type designer, explores both the 1950s and 19th century American and English advertising type in Cosmiqua. First drawing his favorite letterforms — the lowercase x and y, and ball terminals on As and Ns — Kobayashi established the roots of the typeface. Cosmiqua grew from a display face to a full family. Living somewhere between formality and self-recognition, Cosmiqua is yet another classic from Kobayashi.

Agilita®
A humanistic sans, Agilita’s unique character is delicately maintained by offsetting its dramatic ascenders with inverse flares at the end of curved letterforms. Scrutinous detail from designer Jürgen Weltin, makes the ten weight Agilita a well balanced success.

Berling™ Nova
Originally drawn by Karl-Erik Forsberg in 1951, Berling was Sweden’s definitive workhorse for more than half a century. As technologies changed it became apparent to designers Fredrik Andersson and Örjan Nordling that an update was necessary to bring Berling into the digital age. For the Display cut, serifs are softened and inflated; for the Text, contrast is reduced. Intense care was put into every aspect of this digitization of Berling, making it the truest to the original.

Nami®
Adrian Frutiger paired with Akira Kobayashi to complete Nami, Frutiger’s most humanistic sans. Nami, the Japanese word for “wave”, embodies a fluidity rare in type design. Many of the 483 glyphs in each of Nami’s three fonts are alternates, derived from the slow erosion of seaside rocks, and can be swapped seamlessly to create variety in a setting.

Morris Sans®
Rounded exteriors and right angle interiors characterize this tribute to Morris Fuller Benton. Based on the same 1930s drawings that led to Bank Gothic, Dan Reynolds has resurfaced a hidden gem in Morris Sans. A full lowercase has been added to the family, all based on Benton’s original sketches. Small caps are also included for those dedicated to the iconic, Bank Gothic look.

Beret™
Designer Eduardo Omine’s award-winning Beret is the perfect counterpart to the adornment-free sans serifs of the 20th century. With its subtle flares, Beret is very much a classic humanist sans, however Omine added slight bends to the terminals, creating a refreshingly playful yet tasteful text face.

Avenir® Complete
Adrian Frutiger's interpretation of strict sans serifs like Futura, Avenir reframes the linear sans in a late 20th century eye. Avenir’s subtle humanist influence adds a harmony to text settings not present in other geometrics. The entire family is now available in one package.
