Ourtype: New Fonts

OurType holds a special place in FontShop’s heart because it was co-founded by the clever captain of our Benelux operation, Rudy Geeraerts. The foundry was born in 2002 when Rudy teamed up with Fred Smeijers who is internationally known for his writing and lectures, but above all, for his type designs. Smeijers’ work is sought after by designers seeking to dip into the deep well of contemporary Dutch typography.

Six years later, OurType is now one of the world’s preeminent font collections with over a dozen extensive families from both established designers and promising young guns. This latest batch includes several new releases along with existing typefaces updated to OurType’s OTF Pro format which supports the Latin Extended character set and OpenType extras like case-sensitive forms and additional figure styles.

Parry

Parry, Parry Grotesque OpenType

Despite its nineteenth-century roots, Parry is a modern type family. It produces a rounder and softer image than the often rigid slab serifs of the Victorian era. Think of it as a contemporary alternative to Clarendon with the substantial bonus of a complementary sans serif family, plus italics, small caps, and text figures.

Enchanted

Neue Sans OpenType

As its name suggests, this is a modern sans serif. Its shapes are more elegant and also better tuned to each other than the traditional grotesk. André Leonardt’s design is suitable for composing longer texts, and will also work extremely well in contemporary editorial and corporate typographic environments.

Amalia

Amalia OpenType

Nikola Djurek began drawing Amalia in 2004 while practicing with a pointed pen and named it after his grandmother who was extremely handy with the instrument. The first alphabet was soon expanded to a full-fledged, four-weight family. Amalia is an elegant typeface suitable for composing texts of various lengths — from poetry to novels — and its distinctive serif details can set a striking headline.

Sansa

Sansa Slab, Sansa Soft, Sansa OpenType

With Sansa, Fred Smeijers subtly incorporated some of the liberties taken in recent type design while exhibiting a crop of his own ideas. The result is a suite of fonts that can serve in a wide range of daily uses. Slabbed and soft-edged variations are new additions to the family.

Fresco

Fresco, Fresco Informal Sans, Fresco Sans OpenType

Like Smeijers’ Sansa family, the Fresco clan forms a versatile group of related designs. Fresco’s character can be described as a rejuvenation of traditional and conventional concepts. While certainly a contemporary design, it shamelessly embraces all the wisdom of tradition. Professional users will appreciate its typographical reach. The sans and serif companions can be used to set serious reading matter, but they blend equally well in the corporate and magazine world. Fresco Informal is clearly the playful member of the family, but because it shares its dimensions with its text siblings it can mix freely in the same setting.

Fresco Professional OpenType

Fresco Plus, Fresco Sans Plus OpenType
The Plus variation has slightly longer ascenders and descenders than Fresco, with identical spacing for easy swapping.

Eva

Eva OpenType

Named after the warm, organic work of ceramicist Eva Zeisel, Eva defies the popular image of a sans, thanks to the contrast in its strokes and the freedom with which they have been drawn. This friendly personality provides added interest at larger sizes, yet Eva also has a notable clarity, and it works well for setting continuous text. Indeed, it was Zeisel’s “playful search for beauty” that is the crucial connection between her and her audience. Designer Merel Matzinger and Smeijers hope their typeface achieves a similar feeling.

Kremlin

Arnhem OpenType

Arnhem, by Fred Smeijers, was initially designed for the Nederlandse Staatscourant, the daily newspaper of the Dutch state. It is a very functional design suitable for setting text in large quantities. Its strong colour lets Arnhem perform very well at small sizes and in less than optimal printing circumstances. The text faces are accompanied by Arnhem Fine, a delicate titling roman and italic especially designed for use in larger sizes.

   Fresco Informal

Fresco Informal Sans OpenType
This handsome and pleasant member of the Fresco family can mix with its more serious siblings. Suitable for setting text on its own as well.

   Fresco Script

Fresco Script OpenType
Loose and spontaneous, yet controlled enough to be legible at small sizes. Eschews calligraphic writing styles for a more contemporary approach.

   Custodia

Custodia OpenType
A single-weight roman, with italic and matching small caps. Elegant and refined seventeenth-century flavor.

   Monitor

Monitor, Monitor Pro OpenType
Originally designed for office and on-screen use, Monitor has since expanded into a multipurpose family of seven weights and two widths.

   Versa

Versa, Versa Pro OpenType
Peter Verheul paid tribute to the inscriptional and humanist qualities of Optima and Albertus, yet forged something completely original.

   Versa Sans

Versa Sans, Versa Sans Pro OpenType
Charming but strong, the simplified companion to Verheul’s seriffed family includes all the same weights and widths.
