The term Sans Serif was coined by British type designer Vincent Figgins following the release of his earliest sans faces, drawn and cut in related weights in 1832. Sans Serif has come to signify the broadest classification of types without serifs, as the term's predecessors: Doric, Egyptian, Grotesque, or Gothic, have either fallen into disuse, grown to reference specific styles within the Sans category, or outside the category.
