Super Families

TheMix was the starting point of the Thesis superfamily which Luc(as) de Groot released in 1994. TheMix originated as an alphabet for the logotypes of the Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management drawn by Luc(as) while working at BRS Premsela Vonk in Amsterdam.

Thesis was conceived as a versatile typographic system of ambitious scope. It grew out of a dissatisfaction with the limited range of good typefaces available for corporate identity projects. It aims to fill that gap by providing the user with three compatible styles — TheSans, TheMix, and TheSerif — in an optically harmonious range of eight weights, including real italics for each weight.

Thesis is a low-contrast type family — i.e., the differences between thin and thick strokes are not very pronounced. Yet the reference to writing with the broad-nibbed pen is still present, giving the letters a diagonal stress and a forward flow that facilitates reading.

Although the members of the Thesis family have proven to work well as text faces, nothing beats a medium-contrast oldstyle for comfortable immersive reading. Hence TheAntiqua, an all-purpose text face whose name refers to the traditional Dutch/German word for oldstyle.

TheAntiqua’s proportions are similar to those of the Thesis family members, but with increased contrast between thick and thin strokes, and wedge-shaped serifs. Its diagonal stress subtly refers to the stroke of the broad-nibbed pen.

Thesis fonts can be purchased individually, but the packages on this page offer the best value and performance. Discounted packages containing complimentary fonts ensure you get all the styles you need for professional typography.
