György Szönyei
György Szönyei was born in Budapest in 1951. In 1971 he finished the Window-dresser and Decorator Training College and began work as a window-dresser. Then, from 1973 to 1978 he studied graphic design at the Hungarian Academy of Applied Arts. In the years that followed he became a member of the Studio of Young Artists, the Association of Hungarian Graphic Artists, and the Society of Hungarian Illustrators. In 2004 he became a member of the Hungarian type society. From1985 to 1988 he taught typography at the Secondary School of Fine and Applied Arts. At present he teaches graphic design and typography at the Decorator Training College. He won the The Morisawa Awards 1996 International Typeface Design Competition’s Morisawa prise in Kanji category. He makes graphic arts and paintings. He has had many solo and group exhibitions in Hungary, in many European countries and in the USA. He has some paintings in public collections in Albertina Museum, Wien to Ludwig Museum, Budapest etc. His biggest solo exhibition was in 1997 in the Ludwig Museum, Budapest. He publishes art articles in periodicals. In his free-time Szönyei collects objects from the 50s and 60s and plays the bassguitar in a jazz group. He has a wife Eva who works as a window-dresser and they have an eighteen years old son named David.
