Martin L'Allier

Martin L’Allier recently completed his undergraduate degree in graphic design at the University of Quebec at Montreal (UQAM). Currently working primarily as a freelance print designer, L’Allier is also intrigued by information design, and plans to pursue an advanced degree in the subject in the near future. Another of L’Allier’s interests is design writing, mainly about professional and environmental ethical considerations. L’Allier is equally as vocal on the subject of type design, another of his passions. “Type design can be many things,” he says, “a solution to a technical problem, a historical revival, a tool for communication, an experiment in legibility, a work of style, a reflection on meaning, a means for branding, a form of art, a pastime... Whatever it is for you and I, it should always be done with passion. Wear appropriate eye protection!” “Typefaces are one of the rare artifacts of graphic design that last longer than a seasonal trend,” he continues. “I’m looking forward to seeing how and on what type of project my fellow designers will use FF Karo.” Although his chosen profession is tied to technology, L’Allier desperately attempts to reduce the number of hours he spends in front of the computer. In his spare time, he explores sound forms through performing experimental music on the grand organ, and tempts friends and family with his renowned apple pie flambé au Calvados.
