It was always decreed, when young, that I would grow up to do something arty. This was reinforced by my pregnant mother’s visit to a crystal gazer who stated that she saw a blond-haired child surrounded by books and paper. My hair only goes blond in the sun these days but I can barely get out of this room for the books and paper in the way. My parents were amazed when at two years I was able to predict the name of each of the ships passing our home on the Manchester ship canal. Apparently I had memorised the peculiarities of each ships mast, which was all I could see, and linked these to the ships name. Nowadays, when I visit a new place, like Theseus in the labyrinth, I instinctively find my way back to the car from wherever, probably using an unconscious memory of visual clues, unlike my wife, who, despite being a highly intelligent woman, gets hopelessly lost. All of this natural awareness of detail has prepared me for the world of typography with its consistent and sometimes pedantic insistence on authentic detail. As a late adolescent I began to be obsessed with the activity of handwriting and spent many hours experimenting with tools and media. This eventually led to a 10 year career as a signwriter, but the combination of signwriters’, and their clients’ frequent immunity to detail and direct encouragement from Hermann Zapf propelled me into a career as a type designer: a sort of “signwriter with knobs on”. I now teach graphic design, handwriting, lettering and type design at Stafford College, England.
