Verena Gerlach
From 1992 to 1998 Verena Gerlach studied communication design at Kunsthochschule Berlin Weißensee, Glasgow School of Art as well as London College of Printing. She has been designing typefaces, CIs, posters and books at her Berlin studio for nearly 10 years. Furthermore, Verena art-directed several video clips and title animations and was also responsible for the typographic production of art installations. She also teaches typography and type design at the Designakademie Berlin. What interests her most in her current work are the limitations that type designers have had to grapple with throughout the centuries: to unleash creativity where there is little room for manoeuvre. To her, this scarity of available compromise presents a challenge she is keen to take, as she relishes the demand for clear decisions that type design imposes: There is no scope for ambiguities. Verena has been lecturing and conducting workshops throughout Europe for 7 years.
