App fonts are licensed for embedding in mobile apps, helping app makers build personality into their work, and offering all companies and organizations the ability to communicate with a consistent and recognizable typographic voice, now across every medium — print, web, e-mail, and with app fonts, native apps.

Download app fonts from FontShop by finding the family you’d like to license, selecting ‘Buying Options‘ on the family page, or ‘Buy’ in the search results listing, and specifying App or App+ under Licenses.

The difference between App and App+

App+ is a special licensing option offered only by our house brand, FontFont, and covers mobile app embedding as well as editable PDF and ePub embedding. Licensing for App+ does not restrict the number of app downloads, but is limited to a set period of your choosing: 1 year, 3 years, 5 years, and perpetual licensing which never requires renewal.

App licensing covers embedding in iOS, Android, and Windows Phone apps. All App licenses are perpetual, but limit the number of app downloads permitted per license. (Purchase an additional license to cover additional downloads.) The limit varies by foundry, but is prominently stated at checkout or in the end user license agreement. Not all of FontShop’s partner foundries offer App fonts, though many do.

Getting app fonts to work is similar to setting up webfonts. Put them in the appropriate directory, tell your code where to find them, and access them by name. There are plenty of developer guides out there explaining the process in more detail.

Cost

Unlike desktop fonts or webfonts, using App fonts requires what’s essentially a redistribution license, allowing the app developer to bundle the font software and resell it as part of his or her product. Though it varies depending on the options selected at checkout, App fonts cost about the same as ten desktop licenses for a given package or individual style.
