Jos Buivenga for exljbris
More than any other of his releases, Museo put Jos Buivenga’s exljbris label on the map. A linear mixture of sans and serif, Museo went on to expand its reach, with Sans and Slab variants of its own. Be sure to check out other exljbris releases, each containing a free style.
Hannes von Döhren for HVD Fonts
Hannes von Döhren’s Comic Serif is obviously a gimmick, its name given in acknowledgement of Vincent Connare’s much more popular (and with many, much less popular) Comic Sans. But it works. It’s casual and only a little clumsy. Available in both the desktop and web versions.
Dieter Hofrichter’s Civita is a pointed brush in a steady hand. Its warm calligraphic forms follow the models of rationalized Romance types of the late eighteenth century, while its fit and gait show a sophisticated systematization of harmonized character widths and spaces.
Veronika Burian and José Scaglione for TypeTogether
The Abril family is of two minds; Its forms follow both the models of 18th century Didones, and the Clarendons and Scotch Romans of the 19th, cutting back and forth to suit the needs of the composition. It’s from this latter bunch that Abril Display’s heaviest gets its pluck.
Daniel Hernández for Latinotype
A slab serif poised at the edge between geometric and grotesque, Newslab adds additional Latin flavor subtly, but effectively. In text its regular weight reads like Pierpont’s Rockwell, but when used in combination with its extreme weights, the full warmth of personality shows.
