The original FF Dingbats font package was designed in 1993. At that time, there were no symbol font available on the market, except for Zapf Dingbats, whose design dated from the 1970s.

The FF Dingbats package was the first symbol typeface for a new generation. The package included about 800 symbols and icons for the world of modern communication. There were glyphs for faxes, ISDN, disks, keyboards, etc. All of them were absolutely usable! But, over time, things changed. Many of these pictograms were longer needed. Who uses floppy disks nowadays, anyway? Other icons were still relevant, but their FF Dingbats forms looked too dated.

In 2007, Johannes Erler and Henning Skibbe started a complete redesign of the FF Dingbats. Now all of the pictograms have been revised and adjusted according to the latest stylistic vocabulary. The arrow and number fonts have been reworked and extended as well. All symbols have been sorted into clear categories, and the font “Strong Forms” includes the most needed symbols in a bolder version.

Aside from this, many of the symbols may be layered and colored via an easy-to-use layering feature – just see the FF Dingbats 2.0 Info Guide PDF. The FF Dingbats 2.0 are a state-of-the-art font package, and are probably the largest collection of contemporary symbols and icons for office communication, too.
