FF FancyWriting is a small typeface family from contemporary English calligrapher Timothy Donaldson. The impetus for this design came from a desire to create handwritten letterforms in a digital manner. Using a Wacom tablet and Painter, Donaldson dashed off a number of versions for each letter. He picked out the best letters and then vectorized them, tweaking the outlines. From this – FF FancyWriting Median – he made the thin and fat versions (micro and mega).
One distinctive feature of the FF FancyWriting typeface is that the uppercase letters are very short. “They don't always need to be those huge imposing things, do they?” quips Donaldson on the matter.
