Sax by Coen Hofmann can be traced back to the 'Modern Romans' of the Chicago type founders Barnhart Brothers & Spindler. In 1903 the US Mergenthaler Linotype Co. adapted one of these fonts and added it to their catalog as face No. 1. The English Linotype & Machinery called it No. 35, while the Intertype Corp. copied the face again as No. 1. The name Sax was given in honor of Adolphe Sax, a highly gifted maker of musical instruments, who next to his creation, the saxophone, invented several other wind instruments.
