Avernus was designed by American designer Phil Martin in 1972. It is strongly inspired by ITC Kabel and ITC Rotunda, actually being a mixture of both. ITC Kabel again is a redesign / revival of the original Kabel typeface design created in 1928 by German designer Rudolf Koch. Phil Martin’s Avernus creates its own character by combining forms and elements from both Kabel and Rotunda. The upper case characters are designed after the Roman Capitalis which consists of just a few very distinct form elements (circle, triangle, quadrat). Phil Martin added art-deco features to all of this. Like Cable (and the Roman Capitalis), Avernus characters differ quite a bit in width. Fonts from this category have been very popular amongst ad designers for decades.
