Let’s look at Roxane Gataud’s Bely with Xavier Dupré’s FF Sanuk. This summer at TypeCon I was pleased to meet Roxane Gataud and get to know more about this, her first release. Bely is a bookish magazine face in its text weights, with an editorially minded Display cut. FF Sanuk is a straight-sided tech sans, but, not so fast. Have a look yourself and see if you agree with me that its humanistic touches all but disqualify it from that classification. Squarish, yes, but it’s also full of warmth.

Today we take a look at Dan Reynolds’s Malabar paired with Martin Lexelius’s Borgstrand. Malabar is a stunning Renaissance Roman, brought up in the Dutch tradition and made to fill today’s specific needs. Borgstrand is an engineer’s answer to the question “What might a set of sturdy letters look like?”

Let’s take a look at Sindre Bremnes’ Satyr paired with Evert Bloemsma’s FF Legato: I’ll start by confessing this is a combination that type designer (and quite talented typographer) Nina Stössinger suggested to me a few years back after I published a Great Pair that admittedly wasn’t that “Great.”

Nocturno’s absorbing text and brilliant display weights pair with Venus’ hand-drawn warmth and haphazard rhythm to create a relationship that accentuates the rough and smooth in each.

Moving away briefly from the usual kinds of relationships I explore here, a serif and a sans family combined, we look at the addition of a strong semi-connected script to an unconventional type family with both sans and serif styles and that spans both text and display.
