The Austrian designer Victor Hammer (1882-1967) created the American Uncial typeface while he was living in the United States during the 1940s. This typeface is similar to Neue Hammer Unziale, although Neue Hammer Unziale is actually a later re-release of this design. American Uncial is a unicase design. The upper and lowercase letters have the same design, and are the same size.Victor Hammer... Read More

Uppsala is a new and original uncial typeface designed by Paul Shaw in collaboration with Garrett Boge in 1998. Its strongly chiseled shapes were inspired by historical northern European manuscript lettering. The face is appropriate for short text or display settings.

The capital alphabet Charlemagne was designed in 1989 by Carol Twombly. The basic forms are modelled on those used in classical Roman engravings. They are distinguished by pointed serifs which sometimes extend beyond the bounds of the forms, for instance on the E, F and S. These serif forms have made other historial appearances, for example, in handwritten rectangular capitals of the 9th... Read More

Victor Hammer created many faces based on uncial handwriting of which American Uncial, released commercially by the Stempel foundry in 1952, is the source for this version. Uncial is an ideal choice for historical or church pieces, provided that the length of the copy is brief.

Like Herculanum and Rusticana , Pompeijana™ is one of Adrian Frutiger's contributions to the "Type Before Gutenberg" series. Linotype invited accomplished designers and calligraphers to create new interpretations of scripts from the centuries before Gutenberg's revolutionary invention. Pompeijana is named after Pompeii, one of the ancient Roman cities destroyed by the eruption of Mount... Read More

Jan Middendorp described FF Brokenscript in his book Dutch Type (2004) thus: “It is a study in Fraktur, or blackletter, possibly inspired by Gerrit Noordzij’s extensive writings on the subject.” One of the first blackletter typefaces in the FontFont library, the design takes cues from the early textura scribal tradition. The letterforms have been somewhat updated however, especially the... Read More

Karlgeorg Hoefer designed Beneta in 1991, inspired by the Littera beneventana, the script of the Benedictine scribes from the 10th to the 12th century. During this time, scribes began to use wider pens and set them at a 45 degree angle to the paper, which caused their scripts to have radical stroke contrasts. This script was mainly used for books and certificates but disappeared by the end of... Read More

Codex was designed by Georg Trump and introduced by the font foundry C.E. Weber in 1954. Based on the German Gothic script of the 13th century, this font has the character of handwriting. Its capital letters are extremely big in comparison with the lower case, hence good for contrast in short text, however, this characteristic makes the font better suited to languages which use fewer capital...
