ITC Kristen is the work of American designer George Ryan. He describes it as "not your average text or display font." The inspiration for the design came from the handwritten menu at a neighborhood restaurant. With time, the forms moved away from the originals and towards something more like a child's scrawl. The result is singularly unique. ITC Kristen remains legible without losing any charm.

The branding agency's client wanted an "ultra modern" typeface that was "futuristic without being gimmicky or ephemeral," according to the design brief. Designer Sebastian Lester took on this intriguing custom font assignment, but soon, a bureaucratic decision cancelled the project."I was left with a sketchbook full of ideas and thought it would be a shame not to see what came of them," says... The type family FF Layout is intended to be used for planning complex layouts. It contains a block-letter, hand-written face FF Layout (4 weights: Regular, Bold, Italic, and Bold Italic), FF Oxmox (Regular and Bold) where all letters are replaced with either x, m, or o, and the “greeked” text FF Tramline that displays the text as solid grey lines. While the comic-like FF Layout can be used well... Read More

FF Jambono is an informal script-derived sans family from Xavier Dupré. He explains, “I designed FF Tartine Script and FF Jambono in 2000–2001 when I worked as type designer in a packaging design agency in Paris. I just wanted to have a complete font up my sleeve for when I need to design a logo for someone. FF Jambono is a display type for packaging, but it can also be used in text, since it... Read More

In Alex Scholing’s own words, “FF Engine was an attempt at making a good, solid, general-purpose typeface with as little effort as possible. The first thing I did to reduce complications was do away with the contrast in the letters, which means FF Engine is a so-called monolinear typeface (well, almost; try to find how I cheated …). To enhance legibility I added small serif-like bulges at the... Read More

One of Berlin’s must-visit cultural stops is the Prater, a beer garden in Prenzlauer Berg, a district in the eastern part of Berlin. The Prater easily has one of the most unique graphic identities in the city, completely handmade by artist-illustrator Henning Wagenbreth. The alphabets created by Wagenbreth became the starting point for a refreshing type family, FF Prater. To convincingly... Read More

FF Marselis mixes geometric and humanistic models, creating a freshly dynamic sans serif family. All of the apertures in the typeface are wide open; this aids readers’ eyes quickly flow across lines of text, without experiencing hang-ups. Certain superfluous strokes have been eliminated – b and q are spurless, for instance. The letterforms’ diagonals all bow outwards slightly, adding flavor to... Read More

A popular choice within the FontFont library, FF Clan is an extensive family from Polish designer Łukasz Dziedzic. A contemporary sans with modestly squared curves, FF Clan comprises seven weights across an astonishing six widths. Dziedzic’s strong, readable types feature a large x-height, short descenders, and small caps for all weights. The thin weight is delicate but impactful, ideal for... Read More

Hans-Jürgen Ellenberger designed Escript as a handwriting typeface with fresh, lively forms. Each letter has a slightly different character, yet all fit well together and this lack of concrete rules gives the font a spontaneous feel. Escript is well suited to headlines, smaller texts, and initials when combined with constructed typefaces.

The Swiss designer Hans Eduard Meier originally designed Barbedor for the Hell Digiset machine. Barbedor is based on handwritten humanist book scripts of the 15th century, and its chracters are typical of the style of those made by broad tipped pens. Tiny serif-like elements reveal the line of the writing utensil and emphasize the nature of this typeface. Classic and legible, Barbedor is a... Read More
